Izmir City

Izmir was almost totally destroyed in 1922 when the Turkish Army took control from the Greek administration. As a result the city is rebuilt and is relatively new. It is full of bustling cafes, restaurants and places of commerce. It has a beautiful waterfront in the shape of a half moon with ships sitting in the harbour. It is a beautiful city sitting in a valley right down to the waterfront. Izmir is described as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean." "The farthest East of West and the farthest West of East," "The most beautiful city under the sun." Izmir has always been a place of power and influence.
